ENG vs IND Test Series: 5 Things to Look Out For

4 mins read

EVERY TEST COUNTS this time…The new WTC points system gives equal importance to every Test match in this cycle (2021-23), which kicks off with the giants of Test cricket – ENG vs IND. As Virat Kohli’s Team India takes another shot at a Test series win against Joe Root’s England, we look at the 5 major talking points:

Skipper Kohli himself:

There is no series India plays where the captain, Virat Kohli, is not one of the players to watch out for. There’s no exception to that trend this time as well and all eyes will be on whether Kohli gets rid of his century drought to guide India to win after win in England.

Expectations are even bigger after his performances on the 2018 tour. In 10 innings, Kohli scored 593 runs, including 2 hundreds and 3 fifties, and ended up as the leading run-scorer in that series. In fact, the 2nd best scorer (Jos Buttler) was 244 runs behind him.

Stokes-less England in ENG vs IND:

England was dealt a huge blow for the ENG vs IND series when Ben Stokes recently announced his decision to take a break from cricket.

With bat, ball, and in the field, Stokes is England’s star performer everywhere. For a batting line-up that is heavily dependent on the likes of Root, Buttler, and Stokes, the pressure is now much more, especially against a fierce Indian bowling attack.

Can Sam Curran emulate big Ben and fill that gap?

Spoiled for choice – India’s bowling attack:

6 bowlers, all of whom make a compelling case for selection. Bumrah-Shami-Ishant has been the go-to pace line-up. But count out Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Siraj, and Umesh Yadav at your own peril. Thakur chips in with his batting skills as well, while Siraj has been bowling at his best over the last year. Umesh’s experience always keeps him in the reckoning. And that’s just about the pace attack.

Will both the superstar spin-bowling all-rounders – Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja – get to play together at any stage?

Will India fly ‘SKY’ high?

Suryakumar Yadav’s international debut took time to come, but once it did, Suryakumar made up for all the lost time. After his heroics in the ODIs and T20s, the ‘sky’ is the limit for Suryakumar as he lands in England for his first Test series.

He won’t be available for the opening Test due to quarantine rules. But once he joins the squad, will Surya find a spot in the Indian middle-order in the challenging English conditions? If he does, he will surely look to go big.

Can Broad and Anderson get the job done AGAIN in the ENG vs IND series?

Broad and Anderson are still dominating batting attacks and that too in some style!

With over 1100 Test wickets between them, Stuart Broad and James Anderson continue to be the leaders of the bowling attack. But in a 5-Test long series, they are unlikely to play all matches and will need able support from Mark Wood, Ollie Robinson, Sam Curran, Jack Leach, and Dom Bess. Who will step up?
